Shares Rally on Busy Earnings Day

The FTSE 100 rose in early trade on Thursday, just falling shy of yesterday’s all-time intraday high, whilst shares in Frankfurt and Paris rallied over 1% despite a weak session on Wall Street. On a busy day for corporate earnings in London, AstraZeneca rallied 2.5% as it detailed high single digit earnings growth in 2023. The S&P 500 declined more than 1%, whilst the Nasdaq declined almost 1.7%

Stocks Turn Red at US Rates Repricing

I’ve been saying it here for long enough – the Fed will go higher and for longer than the market keeps hoping. Now the latest PPI print and some more hawkish noises from James Bullard has scattered the bulls. The S&P 500 declined by almost 1.4% and the Nasdaq composite dropped by around 1.8% yesterday as markets moved to reprice rates expectations after the PPI came in hot at +0.7% vs the +0.4% expected.

When is a Recession not a Recession?

Rarely has there been such an obsession over what constitutes a recession. The US unexpectedly fell into a technical recession in early 2022 when there were two quarters of negative growth but then turned it around with positive GDP growth in the final two quarters, with Q4 GDP coming in at 2.9% on an annualised basis.

Mogwai Mode for the Fed?

It was a wild ride for stocks on Wall Street yesterday as Fed chair Jay Powell laid out his position for the umpteenth time. Still markets are keen to read the glass as half full, though the pop on Wall Street at the close didn’t take the market above last week’s highs and yields.

BP Bumper Year Lifts FTSE, Powell Due to Speak

BP led the FTSE 100 higher after delivering bumper profits in the final quarter to round out a record year for the company, with shares up almost 4% to a three-year high. Profits doubled to $27.7bn, the most ever. Underlying profits rose to $4.8bn in the final quarter.

5% for one year. No wonder stocks are under pressure when the 1yr Treasury note yields more than 5.1%, its highest in 22 years. FOMC minutes signalled more rate hikes – and remember those minutes were before the hot data that hit the bull rally in recent days.

French and Spanish inflation did for European stocks yesterday. French inflation jumped to 7.2% in the year to February, its highest rate since the euro was introduced and ahead of the 7.0% forecast. On a monthly basis, inflation accelerated to 0.9% from 0.4%. Core annual inflation in Spain rose to 7.7% from 7.5%

Decent End to a Decent Week

More good news from China lifted the boats early on Friday after a positive session on Wall Street gave heart to bulls. Equities in Europe took their cue from Asia after the Caixin services PMI for China rose to 55. Equity markets also got a boost as yields pulled back from intraday highs amid some marginally more dovish Fed speak. The 10yr Treasury yield pressed on 4.1% at one point but has retreated to around 4.02%, whilst the 2yr was at its highest in a decade.

The Week Ahead: Eurozone inflation, Salesforce and Costco Earnings

The week ahead sees inflation data from Australia and the Eurozone watched closely as markets reprice expectations for how far central banks will take rates. There will also be a slew of manufacturing and services PMIs and earnings season on Wall Street effectively comes to a close with reports from Snowflake, Salesforce, Costco, Marvell, AMC Entertainment, Virgin Galactic and more.

The Week Ahead: Inflation still the story + some big earnings releases

More US inflation data is in focus this week as markets continue to figure out how far the Federal Reserve will go in raising interest rates. With that in mind, the FOMC minutes will be looked at closely for any signals of intent ahead of the PCE inflation report. There’s also US GDP data, a New Zealand central bank decision and flash PMI surveys to look out for.

The Week Ahead: US inflation to Guide Fed Policy Route

With the Federal Reserve entering a new phase of data-dependence, all eyes this week will be on the US inflation data for a clue about how much the central bank hikes further and when it might be inclined to pause rate increases. “The reality is we’re going to react to the data,” Powell said last week, adding that the Fed may well need to raise rates “more than is priced in” by markets. Two separate inflation reports this week will be essential to deciding where the Fed goes next.
